United States

U.S. trucking compliance: DOT and FMCSA compliance software

In the United States, motor carriers are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Trucking safety compliance commonly includes driver qualification files, a medical examiner's certificate, motor vehicle records, drug and alcohol testing, hours of service, and vehicle inspection and maintenance records.

SCM helps you organize and track compliance records. It does not provide legal advice, and regulations change, so confirm requirements with the FMCSA, your state, or a qualified advisor.

How SCM supports U.S. carriers

  • Driver qualification files with a U.S. checklist: CDL, Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC) and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Drug and alcohol test records and Clearinghouse query records, kept with each driver.
  • Compliance items organized by category, including driver qualification, drug and alcohol, hours of service, vehicle maintenance, insurance, permits and audits.
  • Vehicle registration, inspection and insurance expiry dates, with maintenance logs and invoices.
  • Audit-readiness views and printable driver audit reports.

Canada

Canadian trucking compliance: NSC and provincial requirements

In Canada, the National Safety Code (NSC) is a set of national standards for commercial vehicles and drivers developed by the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA). Provinces and territories administer and enforce them, so NSC and provincial compliance requirements, registrations and audits differ by jurisdiction. For example, Ontario carriers operate under a CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration).

Carriers that operate across the border may need to meet both the U.S. FMCSA and DOT requirements and the Canadian NSC and provincial requirements. See U.S. trucking compliance.

SCM helps you organize and track compliance records. It does not provide legal advice, and requirements change, so confirm them with your provincial or territorial regulator or a qualified advisor.

How SCM supports Canadian carriers

  • Driver qualification files with a Canadian checklist: CDL, CVOR, driver's abstract, passport and U.S. visa, with the FAST card optional.
  • Safety training assignments, certification tracking and renewal reminders for every driver.
  • Permits, vehicle registration, inspection and insurance expiry dates, and maintenance logs in one place.
  • Provincial and NSC-related obligations recorded as compliance items with due dates and status.
  • Audit-readiness views and printable driver audit reports.

FAQ

Trucking compliance software: common questions

What is Safety Compliance Manager (SCM)?

SCM is a web-based subscription platform from Data Assent Limited for trucking companies. It brings driver qualification files, hiring, safety training, permits, vehicles and maintenance, documents, alerts and audit-readiness records together in one portal.

Is SCM for U.S. carriers, Canadian carriers, or both?

Both. Driver file checklists follow the country you choose when you invite a driver: the U.S. checklist covers items such as the CDL, Medical Examiner's Certificate and Motor Vehicle Record, and the Canadian checklist covers items such as the CDL, CVOR, driver's abstract, passport and U.S. visa.

How do U.S. FMCSA and DOT requirements differ from Canadian NSC requirements?

In the United States, the FMCSA and the U.S. Department of Transportation set federal requirements under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. In Canada, the National Safety Code provides national standards that each province and territory administers, so details such as operating registrations and audits vary by jurisdiction. Carriers that operate across the border may need to meet both.

Does SCM guarantee compliance or replace regulatory advice?

No. SCM helps you organize, track and evidence your compliance records, but it does not provide legal advice and regulations change. The carrier remains responsible for meeting its obligations, so confirm specific requirements with the relevant regulator or a qualified advisor.

Can my drivers use SCM too?

Yes. Drivers can sign in to complete assigned training, review their compliance items and manage their own SCM profile.

Is there a long-term contract?

No. SCM is a monthly subscription with no long-term contract. See the plans on this page for current pricing.
